about

“Creatures glow with an unearthly light like little crowns...” This phrase from the refrain of ‘White Beetle’ offers a glimpse into the world of ‘Our Founders’. There is something eerily familiar about the songs Michael Olsen has created. Familiar and also surreal. Naked acoustic guitar, strings, and voice swim in a psychedelic dream. ‘The Nines’ sets spare lyrical stories of past loves, travels, and estrangement in a sonic landscape of artificial splendor. Our Founders draws the listener in directly with fragility and earnestness, while ensuring this directness is confused and intoxicated by the surprising instrumentation and arrangement of the songs. This album welcomes you inside, and hands you a blindfold at the door.

Mike Olsen brings a breadth of experience and skill as producer, writer and player fully to bear on 'The Nines', showcasing a whole new side to his musical skill and compositional prowess. Produced and performed by Olsen and mixed by multi Juno award winning engineer David Travers Smith, ‘Our Founders, ‘The Nines’ is a work of subtle beauty and emotional depth.

Track Name: Floods
Floods
Limpid pools of water
Limpid pools of eyes
I’ve got Sand and Cactus
Under cold black skies
You’ve got the city
You’ve got your friends
You’re famous on the internet
I guess it all depends
Roll this town and conquer
Or slip into the back
That stage is like my bedroom
So lets all hit the sack
Back home there’s a memory
Of something that you said
I don’t want to lose that thought
But I’m starting to lose my head
I know that I’m capable of sinking pretty low
Can’t Learn to admit it but after every show
I can’t admit the fact, (so please)
Get out with some dignity intact
Slightly cracking voice
Right beside my ear
Rising up behind me
A tiny creeping fear
Your tiny little squeal
Give up without a fight
You hear the lovers scream
in floods of winters night
I know that I’m capable of sinking pretty low
Can’t Learn to admit it but after every show
I can’t admit the fact, (so please)
Get out with some dignity intact
I’m sorry that I might not
Carry on the name
Might not be the runner
To entrust the holy flame
So I’ll go back to strange beds
You go to your friends
Shut off all the lights
And we’ll just wait till when
We can be eye to eye
And shut the door real tight
To block out all the screaming
In floods of winters night
Track Name: White Beetle
WHITE BEETLE
Watch, I watch, as you .... you try to lay it down
You’re Breaking out, In tears .... inside an airport lounge
I watch, I watch .... the white beetle crawl
It crawled, all the, the way up the wall
CH
I have you, I'll make you
I'll never live it down
Creatures glow with an unearthly light like little crowns
The Old man, would probably.... would probably weep to see
And I'm afraid, that now with you .... they'll probably come to be
I watched.., the WHITE beetle .... make its way to you
Its hiding out, from you .... right here in plain view
CH
I have you, I'll make you
I'll never live it down
Creatures glow with an unearthly light like little crowns
Track Name: Day of Delights
Day of Delights
Such a day of delights
Such a sweet drowning kiss
As my head goes under
I can’t let you go
Can’t go back to dead
Now I opened my mouth, now too much has been said
A little thought up on a dusty shelf, I’ve never got round to clean
Hope that waits until another life, but maybe it will come back to me now
You’re a tough nut to crack,
such a beautiful shell
I guess I’ll place my bets on a heaven or a hell
I won’t forget the moment when, your smile made me lose my way.
And I won’t forget all those little things
We know I should probably stay away, but let me taste delight for just one day.
Such a Day of delights
Such a Sweet drowning Kiss
As my head goes under
Track Name: Shack
Shack
See the old place is still there
Lots of times that we had where
Old loves that leave a lingering taste
Hang in the halls, brush against my face
I lived there from when I was born
Matchbook from that place we went, where it was warm
Sits in a drawer with a an old credit card
I thought this might hurt, thought it’d be really hard
I am going home to Board up
My little Shack
I wish that I had more
Reason then that
Beaches, Parks that hosted it all
Still marked and torn up, by my fall
from grace, I never healed that scar
Tried to mark the place but the ground was too hard
Waiting for the gods to present me with signs
Waiting for the same thing a thousand times
That the hot spring under rock can explode into day
If only I could tap it, the things I could say….
I am going home to board up
My little Shack
I wish that I had more
Reason then that
Track Name: Another Chance
Another Chance
It’s difficult, to admit the failure
I'm getting tired of this place and of you
But why should I care? There'll always be another chance
I'll wait right here
There's always a few who'll want it
I jumped the gun on that, old familiar song
Won't be the same, the moment's gone
But why should I care? There'll always be another chance
Public despair makes friends out of
perfect strangers
So many people ask, details about my past,
I can't shut them out for ever, so I sever the ties
I become what I most despise
I hope one day ill have the time for scrutiny,
Then I'll try to work out what went wrong with you and me.
But why Should I care? They're always be another chance
I'll wait right here,
There'll always be the ones, who will want to be, my friendsnb
Track Name: Little Letters
Little Letters
Lying close to the sound
Of moving ground
My little place to hide
A little world beneath the seats
The stereo beats
Like the ocean’s tide
Little typed letters, so closely won
That cell phone lit my burrow like a sun
I don’t know who you are, yet
But through my window, I get
It coming through in bits
Single words and typing fits
The mundane and profane
The deepest thoughts in your brain
(are hidden from me like this)
I don’t have your lips to kiss
But we can reminisce about the last time
It’s so far from there to here
Nothing I can do, dear
But that little screen lights the way
From me to you
So near
In a haphazard, fragmented way
It probably reflects the kids today
And what they’re going through
So I’ll fortify, my position
And wait for the next transmission
So please forgive my omission
Of proper punctuation in my reply
Little typed letters so closely won
That cell phone lit my burrow like a sun
The windows open, see the stars
Feel the air
The world is still there where I left it
Stay quiet and they’ll forget you’re there
Track Name: Catalog (Bonus B Side)
a catalog of intimacies that i keep in my head
they flit in and out of my life
or stay until i'm dead
its like a strobe light that's flashing
and leaving little coloured spots in my eyes
they may never go away
and I file them in with the lies, that i told
to make each one of them stay a little while.
